Logging In
If you are using a laptop or desktop computer, the best way to access Canvas is by starting at your college’s website Home page and logging into your MyPortal account. Once you’re logged into MyPortal, you will see the Canvas link under My Favorite Apps.
If you are using a smart phone, the best way to access Canvas is through the Canvas Student app, available from the Apple App Store and Google Play. (You can also use your phone’s web browser to access Canvas through MyPortal, but it may be difficult to navigate and use Canvas on your phone’s small screen.)
If you are using a tablet, you can use either the tablet’s web browser or the mobile app to access your Canvas account.
Note: The Canvas mobile app is not the same as the web version of Canvas. Some features of Canvas and some of the programs and companion sites used in your classes may not work with the Canvas app. If you do not have access to a laptop or desktop computer, ask your instructor if there are any areas of concern about using the Canvas app exclusively to complete your classwork.
Default Login Credentials
Your username (which you enter on the Microsoft Sign-in page) is your 7-digit student ID number followed by our student email domain (example: 0123456@my.scccd.edu). Then click the “Next” button to proceed.
When you click the Next button, the next screen you see should be the SCCCD Sign-in page. Your email / username should already be in the Username box. Your default password is the first letter of your first name (upper case), the first letter of your last name (lower case), and your 6-digit date of birth (MMDDYY).
Your username and password for Canvas is the same login information you use to log into your other student accounts like MyPortal, WebAdvisor, Starfish for Counseling appointments, and student email. That being the case, if you change your password while logging into any of your student accounts, your new password is automatically assigned to all of your student accounts.
Trouble Logging In?
If you are entering your 7-digit student ID number all by itself as your username and your default password (or personal password if you have already changed it), and you receive an error that says your username or password is invalid, your password has probably expired. Default passwords usually expire after 45 days, and personal passwords usually expire after a year. If you have already completed your Communication Preferences in your MyPortal account, you should be able to reset your password and select a new one.
To reset your password, click the Change Password link on any SCCCD Login page. You will be prompted for your username (your student ID number) and your old (current) password, and then you will see a place to enter your brand new password. If you do not know your old (current) password, you can click the link at the bottom of the login page that says “Password reset”. The next page you see will have step by step directions to reset your password by sending a code to either your phone or personal email address, and directions to create a new password.
If you have followed the step by step directions to select a new password and still cannot log into your student account, or if you were unable to reset your password, please call the Student Systems Support Call Center for assistance.
